Summer 2015 Recap

Philip Ameris Jr.

It's been a very busy Summer at the Taekwondo-Ameris Dojang.  From Fund Raising events to MMA Competitions, Training Boot Camps and Black Belt Testing - we've covered alot of ground over the last few months.

The Warrior Mike Spar-a-Thon kicked off the Summer and really set the tone for the Season.  With an outstanding effort from all of our students and surrounding community, we raised nearly $10,000 for the Mike Fraser Benefit Fund - a not for profit benefit established to assist Mr. Mike Fraser (long time Taekwondo-Ameris student and stand out Black Belt) with cutting edge research and start of the art therapy for spinal trauma.

We could not be more proud of this event and believe it to be one of the most successful in our Dojang's long history.  We would like to thank our event sponsor Clockwise Tees (, 100.1 WAMO Radio's DJ Pretty Lou for providing music, and local food trucks for serving up some great eats.

The vision of Grand Master Hee Il Cho's Taekwondo echoed throughout the weekend as students from AIMAA's World Wide Community gathered at the Taekwondo-Ameris Do-Jang for this year's Summer Boot Camp.

Seminars lead by Grand Master Hee Il Cho's highest ranking student and AIMAA Technical Director, Grand Master Philip Ameris (Realistic Street Self Defense), Local MMA Champion, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, and long time AIMAA student, Dominic "The Honey Badger" Mazzotta (Grappling Escapes and Finishes) - showcased the vast talent pool within our organization and the wide range of curriculum AIMAA Taekwondo has to offer.

The weekend was highlighted by Mr. Jacob Cho, son of Grand Master Hee Il Cho and Owner of Cho's Academy in Laguna Beach, CA.  Mr. Cho displayed the full arsenal of what AIMAA Taekwondo is all about - instructing students of a variety of topics including plyometric exercises, Boxing, Traditional Martial Arts, and Yoga.  Jacob is a dynamic example of a Complete Martial Artist and continues to develop his families craft for the next generation of AIMAA students.

We would like to thank all of our event sponsors for making this yearly camp possible, the teams from AIMAA Scotland (Mr. Karim Balgacem Taekwondo), AIMAA Alabama (Mr. Percy Brown Taekwondo), AIMAA New York (Mr. Nico Stoian's Higher Ground Martial Arts), AIMAA California (Cho's Academy), and AIMAA Hawaii (AIMAA HQ) - as well as all of our local students for their great participation over the weekend.

Although our Do-Jang does not seek out or participate in many competitions - Grand Master Ameris' sons, Philip Jr. and Jimmy, have carved out quite a niche in transferring AIMAA Taekwondo to MMA Competition.

The Ameris Brothers have been serving as striking coaches for several local fighters including GOTC Bantamweight Champion, Dominic "The Honey Badger" Mazzotta, and Current UFC Middleweight, Chris Dempsey.

Over the last few months, Philip Jr. has traveled to Newark, NJ and Nashville, TN to corner Dempsey at Live UFC events, and Jimmy has been diligently coaching "The Honey Badger" in preparation for an upcoming title fight for Pinnacle MMA.

On August 7, students crowded the Dojang in support of 5 longtime students with over 100 years of combined Martial Arts Experience seeking Rank Promotion.  To say this test was an impressive, motivating, and memorable is a vast understatement.

5th Degree Black Belts - Mr. Jason Napier, Mr. Dave Kalina, and Mr. Ed Bartosiewicz, along with 4th Degree Black Belts - Dr. Denny Tang, and Mr. Nico Stoian - showcased their many years of hard work and commitment to the Martial Arts lifestyle - elevating the already demanding standard of which Grand Master Ameris requires from his students.

We could not be happier for all of these men in achieving their latest rank, and proud for what they stand for as both Martial Artists and people.
